Ingredients

  • Glutinous rice - 200 grams
  • Mung beans - 100 grams
  • Water - 500 milliliters (for soaking)
  • Water - 300 milliliters (for cooking)
  • Shallots - 2 medium, thinly sliced
  • Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon (optional)
  • Fried shallots - for topping (to taste)
  • Soy sauce - for drizzling (to taste)

Steps

  1. Soak the glutinous rice and mung beans separately in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  2. Drain the soaked mung beans and steam them for about 15-20 minutes until soft. Mash the beans and mix in salt and pepper. Set aside.
  3. Drain the soaked rice and steam it in a rice cooker or steamer for 30-35 minutes until cooked and sticky.
  4. In a pan, heat the cooking oil over medium heat. Add the sliced shallots and fry until golden brown and crispy. Remove from heat and drain on paper towels.
  5. Once the rice is cooked, fluff it and drizzle with sesame oil (if using). Serve the sticky rice in bowls, topped with a generous layer of mung bean paste.
  6. Finish with crispy fried shallots on top, and drizzle with soy sauce to taste.
