- Soy sauce - 60 ml
- Coconut milk - 100 ml
- Sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Shallots - 2, finely chopped
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Star anise - 1 piece
- Black pepper - 1 teaspoon
- Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
- Green onions - 2, chopped (for garnish)
- Fresh cilantro - 2 sprigs (for garnish)
Steps
- Press the firm tofu for 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into 1-inch cubes.
- In a pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped shallots, minced garlic, and grated ginger, sautéing until fragrant.
- Add the cubed tofu to the pan and fry until golden brown on all sides.
- Stir in the soy sauce, coconut milk, sugar, star anise, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.
- Cover and let it cook on low heat for about 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Remove the star anise before serving. Garnish with chopped green onions and fresh cilantro.
