Ingredients

  • Kosher beef (sirloin or flank) - 300 grams
  • Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
  • Shallots - 2, finely chopped
  • Fish sauce (kosher) - 2 tablespoons
  • Sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Black pepper - 1 teaspoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Rice paper wrappers - 8 sheets
  • Lettuce leaves - 4 large
  • Fresh mint - 1/2 cup, leaves only
  • Cilantro - 1/2 cup, leaves only
  • Cucumber - 1 small, julienned
  • Carrots - 1 small, julienned
  • Peanut sauce (kosher) - for dipping

Steps

  1. In a bowl, combine the minced garlic, chopped shallots, fish sauce, sugar, black pepper, and sesame oil to create a marinade.
  2. Slice the kosher beef into thin strips and add it to the marinade. Allow it to marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, grill the marinated beef strips for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until cooked to your desired doneness.
  4. While the beef is grilling, prepare the fresh vegetables and herbs: wash and dry the lettuce, mint, and cilantro. Julienne the cucumber and carrot.
  5. To assemble, fill a shallow dish with warm water. Dip one rice paper wrapper into the water for about 10 seconds until soft and pliable.
  6. Place the softened rice paper on a clean surface. Layer a lettuce leaf, a few mint leaves, cilantro leaves, cucumber, carrot, and grilled beef strips on the rice paper.
  7. Fold the sides of the rice paper over the filling, then roll it up tightly from the bottom to enclose the filling completely.
  8. Repeat the process with the remaining rice paper and filling.
  9. Serve the Thịt Nướng Cuốn with a side of peanut sauce for dipping.
