Ingredients

  • Ground beef (kosher) - 200 grams
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Shallots - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Fish sauce (kosher) - 1 tablespoon
  • Sugar - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Rice paper - 4 sheets
  • Lettuce leaves - 4 large
  • Fresh mint - 10 leaves
  • Fresh cilantro - 10 leaves
  • Cucumber - 1 small, julienned
  • Carrots - 1 small, julienned
  • Peanut sauce (kosher) - for serving

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, minced garlic, chopped shallots, fish sauce, sugar, black pepper, and sesame oil. Mix well until fully combined.
  2. Shape the beef mixture into small meatballs, about 2.5 cm in diameter.
  3. Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium heat and lightly oil the surface. Grill the meatballs for about 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally until they are cooked through and have a nice char.
  4. While the meatballs are grilling, prepare the fresh vegetables. Rinse and dry the lettuce, mint, cilantro, cucumber, and carrots.
  5. To serve, soak a rice paper sheet in warm water for about 15-20 seconds until pliable. Lay it flat on a plate.
  6. Place a lettuce leaf, a few mint and cilantro leaves, some cucumber and carrot strips, and 2-3 meatballs on the rice paper. Fold the sides over and roll it up tightly like a burrito.
  7. Repeat the process with the remaining rice paper and filling ingredients.
  8. Serve the Nem Nuong with peanut sauce for dipping and enjoy your meal.
