Ingredients

  • Mackerel - 2 whole (about 300g each)
  • Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
  • Fish sauce - 3 tablespoons
  • Lime juice - 2 tablespoons
  • Brown sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Black pepper - 1 teaspoon
  • Chili flakes - 1 teaspoon (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro - for garnish
  • Lettuce leaves - for serving

Steps

  1. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
  2. Clean and gut the mackerel, then make 2-3 diagonal slashes on each side of the fish for better marination and cooking.
  3. In a bowl, combine the minced garlic, fish sauce, lime juice, brown sugar, black pepper, and chili flakes to create a marinade.
  4. Rub the marinade all over the mackerel, ensuring it gets into the slashes. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  5. Place the marinated mackerel on the grill and cook for about 6-8 minutes on each side, or until the fish is cooked through and has nice grill marks.
  6. Once cooked, remove the fish from the grill and let it rest for a few minutes.
  7. Serve the grilled mackerel on a platter, garnished with fresh cilantro and accompanied by lettuce leaves.
