- Red chili - 1, sliced (optional)
- Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Vegetable oil - 1 tablespoon
- Water - 200 ml
- Green onions - 2, chopped (for garnish)
- Cilantro - a handful, chopped (for garnish)
Steps
- Heat the vegetable oil in a medium pot over medium heat.
- Add the sliced shallots, minced garlic, and ginger to the pot, sautéing until fragrant and slightly golden.
- Stir in the soy sauce, fish sauce, brown sugar, and black pepper, mixing well.
- Add the mackerel pieces to the pot, gently turning to coat them in the sauce.
- Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the mackerel is cooked through and tender.
- If desired, add sliced red chili for extra heat and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
- Once done, remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions and cilantro before serving.
