Ingredients

  • Mackerel - 400 grams, cleaned and gutted
  • Lemongrass - 2 stalks, chopped
  • Ginger - 1 tablespoon, thinly sliced
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Fish sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Lime - 1, juiced
  • Chili - 1, sliced (optional)
  • Salt - ½ teaspoon
  • Black pepper - ¼ teaspoon
  • Coriander leaves - for garnish

Steps

  1. Prepare the mackerel by rinsing it under cold water and patting it dry with paper towels.
  2. In a bowl, mix the fish sauce, lime juice, salt, and black pepper. Rub this mixture all over the mackerel, ensuring it is well-coated.
  3. In a steamer or heatproof plate, layer the chopped lemongrass, ginger, and garlic. Place the mackerel on top of the aromatics.
  4. If desired, place sliced chili on top of the fish for added heat.
  5. Fill the steamer with water and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and place the mackerel in the steamer.
  6. Cover and steam the mackerel for about 20 minutes or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
  7. Carefully remove the mackerel from the steamer and garnish with coriander leaves before serving.
