Ingredients

  • Broken rice - 200 grams
  • Beef sirloin - 250 grams
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Fish sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Brown sugar - 1 teaspoon
  • Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Cucumber - 1/2, sliced
  • Carrot - 1/2, julienned
  • Fresh herbs (cilantro, mint) - a handful
  • Chili sauce - for serving

Steps

  1. Rinse the broken rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in warm water for 30 minutes.
  2. While the rice soaks, prepare the marinade for the beef by mixing soy sauce, fish sauce, minced garlic, brown sugar, lemon juice, and black pepper in a bowl.
  3. Slice the beef sirloin into thin strips and add it to the marinade, ensuring all pieces are coated. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  4. After marinating, heat the vegetable oil in a grill pan over medium-high heat. Grill the beef strips for about 3-4 minutes on each side until cooked to your liking.
  5. In a pot, bring 400 ml of water to a boil and add the soaked broken rice. Reduce to a simmer, cover, and cook for about 15 minutes until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.
  6. Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork and let it sit for a few minutes.
  7. To serve, place a portion of broken rice on each plate, top with grilled beef, and arrange cucumber, carrot, and fresh herbs around.
  8. Drizzle with extra lemon juice and serve with chili sauce on the side.
