Ingredients

  • Jasmine rice - 150 grams
  • Firm tofu - 200 grams
  • Soy sauce - 3 tablespoons
  • Maple syrup - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Black pepper - 1 teaspoon
  • Five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Vegetable broth - 250 milliliters
  • Cucumber - 1 small, sliced
  • Pickled carrots - 50 grams
  • Fresh cilantro - a handful, for garnish
  • Lime - 1, cut into wedges

Steps

  1. Rinse the jasmine rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then cook it according to package instructions using vegetable broth instead of water for added flavor.
  2. While the rice is cooking, drain and press the firm tofu to remove excess moisture, then slice it into 1 cm thick pieces.
  3. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, maple syrup, minced garlic, black pepper, and five-spice powder to create the marinade. Add the tofu slices and marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  4. Heat cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the marinated tofu slices and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until they are golden brown and slightly crispy.
  5. Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork and divide it between two plates. Top each serving with grilled tofu slices.
  6. Garnish with sliced cucumber, pickled carrots, and fresh cilantro. Serve with lime wedges on the side.
