Ingredients

  • Beef (ground or minced) - 300 grams
  • Betel leaves - 10 large leaves
  • Garlic (minced) - 2 cloves
  • Shallots (minced) - 1 medium
  • Fish sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Black pepper - 1 teaspoon
  • Chili powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Rice (uncooked) - 150 grams
  • Cucumber (sliced) - 1 small
  • Fresh herbs (mint, cilantro) - 20 grams
  • Lime wedges - 2
  • Vegetable oil - 1 tablespoon

Steps

  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, combine the ground beef, minced garlic, minced shallots, fish sauce, sugar, black pepper, and chili powder. Mix well and let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  3. While the beef marinates, drain the rice and cook it in a rice cooker or on the stovetop according to package instructions.
  4. Take a betel leaf and place a tablespoon of the marinated beef mixture in the center. Fold the sides over the beef and roll it tightly into a tube. Repeat with the remaining leaves and beef.
  5. Heat a grill pan or outdoor grill over medium heat and brush it with vegetable oil. Grill the beef rolls for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked and slightly charred.
  6. Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork and divide it between two plates.
  7. Place the grilled beef rolls on top of the rice, and garnish with sliced cucumber and fresh herbs. Serve with lime wedges on the side.
