Ingredients

  • White fish fillets (e.g. tilapia or catfish) - 400 grams
  • Soy sauce - 3 tablespoons
  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 tablespoon, minced
  • Spring onions - 2, chopped
  • Fresh cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Red chili - 1, sliced (optional)
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper - to taste
  • Lemon - 1, sliced

Steps

  1. Prepare the fish fillets by rinsing them under cold water and patting them dry with paper towels. Season both sides with salt and black pepper.
  2. In a bowl, mix together soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, and minced ginger to create a marinade.
  3. Place the fish fillets in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them, ensuring they are well coated. Allow to marinate for about 10 minutes.
  4. While the fish is marinating, prepare a steamer or set a heatproof plate in a pot with a few inches of water, ensuring the plate does not touch the water. Bring the water to a gentle simmer.
  5. Place the marinated fish on the heatproof plate and top with chopped spring onions, fresh cilantro, and sliced lemon. If using, add sliced red chili for extra heat.
  6. Cover the pot with a lid and steam the fish for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork.
  7. Once cooked, carefully remove the plate from the pot. Serve the steamed fish hot with additional soy sauce on the side, if desired.
