Ingredients

  • Whole fish (such as tilapia or snapper) - 400 grams
  • Fresh ginger - 30 grams, sliced
  • Scallions - 4 stalks, chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Cooking wine (or rice wine) - 1 tablespoon
  • Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Water - 500 milliliters
  • Cilantro - for garnish

Steps

  1. Clean the fish thoroughly and make 2-3 diagonal slashes on each side to help it cook evenly.
  2. In a bowl, mix the soy sauce, cooking wine, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Marinate the fish in this mixture for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Prepare a steaming setup by filling a pot with 500 ml of water and bringing it to a boil.
  4. Place the fish on a heatproof plate. Scatter sliced ginger, chopped scallions, and minced garlic over the fish.
  5. Once the water is boiling, place the plate with the fish into the steamer basket or on a rack above the boiling water, ensuring it doesn’t touch the water.
  6. Cover and steam the fish for about 15-20 minutes, or until the flesh is opaque and flakes easily with a fork.
  7. Garnish the steamed fish with fresh cilantro before serving.
