Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 200 grams
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Hoisin sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Vegetable oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Paprika - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Baguette - 2 pieces
  • Cucumber - 1 small, sliced
  • Carrot - 1 medium, julienned
  • Daikon radish - 100 grams, julienned
  • Fresh cilantro - a handful
  • Jalapeño - 1, sliced (optional)
  • Mayonnaise - 2 tablespoons (vegan if desired)
  • Lime - 1, cut into wedges

Steps

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture for about 15 minutes, then cut it into 1 cm thick slices.
  2. In a bowl, mix soy sauce, hoisin sauce, vegetable oil, minced garlic, black pepper, and paprika to create a marinade.
  3. Add the tofu slices to the marinade and let them soak for at least 10 minutes.
  4. Preheat a grill pan or outdoor grill over medium heat.
  5. Grill the marinated tofu slices for about 5-7 minutes on each side until they are golden and slightly charred.
  6. While the tofu is grilling, prepare the vegetables: slice the cucumber, julienne the carrot and daikon radish, and chop the cilantro.
  7. Once the tofu is done, slice the baguettes open lengthwise but not all the way through.
  8. Spread a tablespoon of mayonnaise inside each baguette, then layer with grilled tofu, cucumber, carrot, daikon, jalapeño (if using), and cilantro.
  9. Serve with lime wedges on the side for squeezing over the sandwich.
