Ingredients

  • Beef (sirloin or flank) - 250 grams
  • Garlic (minced) - 2 cloves
  • Shallot (minced) - 1 medium
  • Soy sauce (Halal) - 2 tablespoons
  • Fish sauce (Halal) - 1 tablespoon
  • Brown sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Black pepper - 1 teaspoon
  • Lime juice - 1 tablespoon
  • French baguette - 2 pieces
  • Cucumber (sliced) - 100 grams
  • Carrot (julienned) - 50 grams
  • Daikon radish (julienned) - 50 grams
  • Fresh cilantro - a handful
  • Fresh mint - a handful
  • Chili sauce (optional) - to taste
  • Mayonnaise (optional) - to spread

Steps

  1. In a bowl, combine minced garlic, shallot, soy sauce, fish sauce, brown sugar, black pepper, and lime juice to create a marinade.
  2. Slice the beef thinly against the grain and add it to the marinade, mixing well. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, grill the marinated beef for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until cooked to your desired level of doneness.
  4. While the beef is grilling, prepare the vegetables: slice the cucumber, julienne the carrot and daikon radish, and rinse the fresh herbs.
  5. Once the beef is cooked, remove it from the grill and let it rest for a couple of minutes before slicing it into strips.
  6. Slice the baguettes open lengthwise, and optionally spread mayonnaise inside.
  7. Layer the grilled beef strips, cucumber slices, carrot, daikon, cilantro, and mint inside the baguettes.
  8. Drizzle with chili sauce if desired, close the baguettes, and serve immediately.
