Ingredients

  • Beef (sirloin or flank steak) - 300 grams
  • Garlic (minced) - 2 cloves
  • Shallots (minced) - 1 small
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Fish sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Brown sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Baguette - 2 small
  • Cucumber (sliced) - 1/2
  • Carrot (julienned) - 1/2
  • Daikon radish (julienned) - 1/2
  • Fresh cilantro - 1/4 cup
  • Jalapeño (sliced) - 1 small
  • Mayonnaise (light) - 2 tablespoons
  • Lime (cut into wedges) - 1

Steps

  1. In a bowl, combine minced garlic, shallots, soy sauce, fish sauce, brown sugar, five-spice powder, black pepper, and vegetable oil to create the marinade.
  2. Slice the beef thinly against the grain and add it to the marinade, ensuring all pieces are coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes.
  3. While the beef is marinating, prepare the vegetables: slice the cucumber, julienne the carrot and daikon, and chop the cilantro.
  4. Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Remove the beef from the marinade and grill for 4-5 minutes on each side until cooked to your desired doneness.
  5. While the beef is grilling, cut the baguettes in half lengthwise and lightly toast them on the grill for 1-2 minutes until crispy.
  6. Spread a tablespoon of light mayonnaise on each side of the toasted baguette.
  7. Assemble the bánh mì by placing an equal amount of grilled beef on each baguette. Top with cucumber slices, carrot, daikon, fresh cilantro, and jalapeño slices.
  8. Serve with lime wedges on the side for squeezing over the top.
