Ingredients

  • Ground beef - 250 grams
  • Wild betel leaves (lá lốt) - 10 leaves
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Shallot - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Fish sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Coconut aminos - 1 tablespoon
  • Black pepper - 1 teaspoon
  • Red chili flakes - 1/2 teaspoon (optional)
  • Olive oil - 1 tablespoon (for grilling)
  • Lettuce leaves - 4 leaves (for serving)
  • Fresh herbs (mint, cilantro) - 1/2 cup mixed (for serving)

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, minced garlic, chopped shallot, fish sauce, coconut aminos, black pepper, and red chili flakes (if using). Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  2. Take a wild betel leaf and place about 1 tablespoon of the beef mixture in the center. Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling and roll it up tightly. Repeat with the remaining leaves and beef mixture.
  3. Heat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat and brush with olive oil. Place the wrapped beef rolls seam-side down on the grill.
  4. Grill the rolls for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until the beef is cooked through and the leaves are slightly charred.
