Ingredients

  • Basmati rice - 150 grams
  • Water - 300 milliliters
  • Black cumin seeds (çörek otu) - 1 teaspoon
  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Onion (finely chopped) - 1 small
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Fresh parsley (chopped, for garnish) - 1 tablespoon

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. Soak the rice in water for about 20 minutes, then drain.
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
  3. Stir in the black cumin seeds and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the soaked and drained basmati rice to the saucepan, stirring gently to coat the rice with the oil and onion mixture.
  5. Pour in 300 milliliters of water, and add salt and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  6. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.
  7. Remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit covered for another 5 minutes.
  8. Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving.
