Ingredients

  • Water - 150 milliliters
  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Active dry yeast - 7 grams
  • Sugar - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black cumin seeds (çörek otu) - 2 teaspoons

Steps

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt, then add the black cumin seeds.
  3. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  4. Mix until the dough comes together, then knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 220°C (428°F).
  7. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and shape it into a round loaf or divide it into two smaller loaves.
  8. Place the shaped dough on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  9. Optional: Brush the top with a little olive oil and sprinkle additional black cumin seeds on top.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
