- Chickpeas - 200 grams (cooked)
- Tamarind paste - 2 tablespoons
- Fresh cilantro - 2 tablespoons (chopped)
- Green onion - 2 (finely chopped)
- Garlic - 2 cloves (minced)
- Red chili - 1 (finely chopped, adjust to taste)
- Ground cumin - 1 teaspoon
- Ground coriander - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
- Whole wheat burger buns - 2
- Lettuce leaves - 4
- Sliced cucumber - 1/2 (optional)
- Sriracha sauce - for serving
Steps
- In a mixing bowl, mash the cooked chickpeas with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but still a bit chunky.
- Add tamarind paste, chopped cilantro, green onion, minced garlic, chopped red chili, ground cumin, ground coriander, salt, and pepper to the mashed chickpeas. Mix until well combined.
- Form the mixture into two equal-sized patties.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and heated through.
- While the patties are cooking, toast the whole wheat burger buns in a separate pan or toaster until lightly browned.
- Assemble the burgers by placing a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by the cooked patty, and optional sliced cucumber. Drizzle with Sriracha sauce to taste and close with the top half of the bun.
