Khao Tan

Khao Tan is a delightful Thai snack made from crispy rice crackers topped with a sweet and savory mixture of coconut and sesame. This gluten-free treat is perfect for snacking or as a light appetizer.

Ingredients

  • Sticky rice - 150 grams
  • Coconut milk - 100 ml
  • Sesame seeds - 2 tablespoons
  • Palm sugar - 30 grams
  • Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - for frying

Steps

  1. Soak the sticky rice in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  2. Drain the soaked rice and steam it in a steamer basket lined with cheesecloth for about 30 minutes until tender.
  3. Once steamed, transfer the rice to a mixing bowl and add the coconut milk, palm sugar, and salt. Mix well until the sugar is dissolved.
  4. Spread the mixture evenly onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, about 0.5 cm thick. Allow it to cool and set for about 30 minutes.
  5. Once set, cut the mixture into small squares or circles.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the rice pieces until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes on each side.
  7. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with sesame seeds while still hot.
  8. Serve warm or at room temperature.
