Ingredients

  • Sticky rice - 200 grams
  • Mung beans - 100 grams
  • Coconut milk - 200 milliliters
  • Brown sugar - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Banana leaves - 4 pieces (for wrapping)
  • Sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon (for garnish)
  • Fresh cilantro - a few sprigs (for garnish)

Steps

  1. Soak the sticky rice in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  2. Rinse the mung beans and boil them in water for about 30 minutes until soft. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a bowl, mix the cooked mung beans with coconut milk, brown sugar, and salt until well combined.
  4. Steam the soaked sticky rice for 20-25 minutes until fully cooked and translucent.
  5. Lay out the banana leaves and cut them into squares large enough to wrap the rice mixture.
  6. Place a small amount of sticky rice on the banana leaf, followed by a spoonful of the mung bean mixture, and top with more sticky rice.
  7. Fold the banana leaf over the filling to create a parcel and secure it with kitchen twine or toothpicks.
  8. Steam the wrapped parcels for an additional 20 minutes to meld the flavors.
  9. Remove from the steamer and let cool slightly before unwrapping.
  10. Garnish with sesame seeds and fresh cilantro before serving.
