Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 300 grams
  • Banana leaves - 4 large pieces
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Coconut milk - 3 tablespoons
  • Lime juice - 1 tablespoon
  • Brown sugar - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Turmeric powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Fresh cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper - to taste

Steps

  1. Press the tofu for 20 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into thick slices.
  2. In a bowl, mix the soy sauce, coconut milk, lime juice, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, turmeric, chili powder, salt, and pepper to create a marinade.
  3. Add the tofu slices to the marinade, ensuring they are well coated, and let them marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  4. While the tofu is marinating, prepare the banana leaves by cutting them into rectangles large enough to wrap each tofu slice, and briefly heat them over an open flame or in a pan to make them pliable.
  5. Place a marinated tofu slice in the center of each banana leaf rectangle, sprinkle with chopped cilantro, and wrap tightly, securing with kitchen twine or toothpicks.
  6. Preheat the grill to medium heat. Grill the wrapped tofu packets for about 10-12 minutes on each side, turning occasionally, until heated through and slightly charred.
  7. Carefully unwrap the banana leaves and serve the grilled tofu with lime wedges and extra cilantro.
