Ingredients

  • 500g lean ground beef
  • 1 large red bell pepper - diced
  • 1 small onion - finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic - minced
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • Salt - to taste
  • Pepper - to taste
  • 2 whole wheat burger buns
  • 100g low-fat cheese - sliced (optional)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Mixed greens - for serving
  • 1 medium tomato - sliced
  • Avocado - sliced (optional)

Steps

  1. Preheat a grill or frying pan over medium heat.
  2. In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and sauté the diced red bell pepper, onion, and minced garlic until soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, sautéed vegetables, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper, mixing until just combined.
  4. Divide the meat mixture into two equal portions and shape them into burger patties.
  5. Add another tablespoon of olive oil to the grill or pan and cook the burger patties for 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
  6. If using, place a slice of low-fat cheese on each burger during the last minute of cooking to melt.
  7. Toast the whole wheat burger buns on the grill or in the pan for 1-2 minutes until golden.
  8. Assemble the burgers by placing the patty on the bottom half of the bun, topping with sliced tomatoes, mixed greens, and avocado if desired. Cap with the top half of the bun and serve immediately.
