Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour - 150 grams
  • granulated sugar - 30 grams
  • active dry yeast - 5 grams
  • warm water (about 40°C) - 75 ml
  • vegetable oil - 30 ml
  • vanilla extract - 5 ml
  • salt - 1 gram
  • orange zest - 1 teaspoon

Steps

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Add the frothy yeast mixture, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and orange zest to the dry ingredients.
  4. Knead the mixture by hand or with a stand mixer for about 10 minutes until you have a smooth and elastic dough.
  5. Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until it doubles in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  7. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into two equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long, thin shape, about 30 cm long.
  8. Place the shaped dough onto a lined baking sheet, leaving space between them, and let them rise again for about 15 minutes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving with hot chocolate or horchata for dipping.
