Ingredients
- Spaghetti - 160 grams
- Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Onion - 1 medium, chopped
- Canned diced tomatoes - 400 grams
- Fresh basil - 10 grams, chopped
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Black pepper - to taste
- Red pepper flakes - 1/4 teaspoon (optional)
- Sugar - 1 teaspoon (to balance acidity)
Steps
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water, then drain the spaghetti.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 5 minutes until translucent.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- Stir in the canned diced tomatoes, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and sugar. Bring to a simmer and let cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Once the sauce has thickened, add the cooked spaghetti to the skillet. Toss to combine, adding reserved pasta water as needed to reach desired consistency.
- Remove from heat and stir in the chopped fresh basil. Serve warm, garnished with additional basil if desired.
