Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour - 150 grams
  • water - 200 milliliters
  • yeast - 5 grams
  • sugar - 10 grams
  • salt - 1 gram
  • cornstarch - 10 grams
  • vegetable oil (for frying) - 500 milliliters
  • honey - 100 grams
  • water (for syrup) - 50 milliliters
  • ground cinnamon - 1 teaspoon

Steps

  1. In a bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, salt, and cornstarch together.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a smooth batter forms. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  4. In a saucepan, combine honey and 50ml of water. Heat gently until the honey dissolves and the syrup thickens slightly. Stir in the ground cinnamon.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
  6. Once the oil is hot, using a piping bag or a squeeze bottle, pipe the batter into spiral shapes directly into the oil.
  7. Fry the zalabia until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  8. Immediately dip the fried zalabia into the honey syrup, ensuring they are well-coated.
  9. Serve warm, drizzled with additional honey if desired.
