- all-purpose flour - 150 grams
- water - 200 milliliters
- yeast - 5 grams
- sugar - 10 grams
- salt - 1 gram
- cornstarch - 10 grams
- vegetable oil (for frying) - 500 milliliters
- honey - 100 grams
- water (for syrup) - 50 milliliters
- ground cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
Steps
- In a bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a separate bowl, mix the flour, salt, and cornstarch together.
- Add the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a smooth batter forms. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- In a saucepan, combine honey and 50ml of water. Heat gently until the honey dissolves and the syrup thickens slightly. Stir in the ground cinnamon.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
- Once the oil is hot, using a piping bag or a squeeze bottle, pipe the batter into spiral shapes directly into the oil.
- Fry the zalabia until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Immediately dip the fried zalabia into the honey syrup, ensuring they are well-coated.
- Serve warm, drizzled with additional honey if desired.
