Ingredients

  • Sweet potato - 300 grams
  • Chickpeas - 100 grams (cooked)
  • Red onion - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Paprika - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Olive oil - 1 tablespoon (for cooking)
  • Breadcrumbs - 50 grams
  • Lettuce leaves - 2 (for serving)
  • Tomato - 1 medium, sliced (for serving)
  • Tahini sauce - 2 tablespoons (for serving)

Steps

  1. Peel and chop the sweet potato into small cubes. Boil them in salted water for about 15 minutes or until tender, then drain and let cool slightly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mash the cooked sweet potatoes and add the cooked chickpeas. Use a fork or potato masher to combine until mostly smooth with some texture remaining.
  3. Add the finely chopped red onion, minced garlic, chopped cilantro, cumin, coriander, paprika, salt, black pepper, and breadcrumbs to the sweet potato mixture. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
  4. Form the mixture into two equal-sized patties, about 1.5 cm thick. Place them on a plate and refrigerate for about 10 minutes to firm up.
  5. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the kefta patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and heated through.
  6. Serve the burgers on a bed of lettuce, topped with sliced tomatoes and drizzled with tahini sauce.
