Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour - 200 g
  • Warm water - 100 ml
  • Active dry yeast - 5 g
  • Sugar - 50 g
  • Salt - 1/2 tsp
  • Vegan butter - 75 g, softened
  • Brown sugar - 50 g
  • Cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • Almonds, sliced - 30 g
  • Orange blossom water - 1 tsp

Steps

  1. In a bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and 1 tsp of sugar; let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In another bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms. Cover and let it rise for 30 minutes.
  3. Once risen, roll out the dough on a floured surface into a rectangle. Spread softened vegan butter evenly over the surface.
  4. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon over the buttered dough. Fold the dough into thirds, like a letter, and roll it out again into a rectangle.
  5. Repeat the butter and sugar layering and folding process twice more, then roll out the final rectangle to about 1 cm thickness.
  6. Cut the dough into squares and place them in a greased baking dish. Sprinkle sliced almonds on top and drizzle with orange blossom water.
  7. Cover and let rise for another 20 minutes, then preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and caramelized. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
