Ingredients

  • Basmati rice - 150 grams
  • Water - 300 milliliters
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Fresh cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Lemon zest - 1 teaspoon

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat and add the cumin seeds. Sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pan, cooking until the onion is translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Stir in the rinsed rice, salt, and black pepper, toasting for 2 minutes while stirring frequently.
  5. Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a lid.
  6. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water has been absorbed.
  7. Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes.
  8. Fluff the rice with a fork and stir in the chopped cilantro and lemon zest before serving.
