Ingredients

  • Masa harina - 1 cup (120g)
  • Warm water - 3/4 cup (180ml)
  • Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Oil (for cooking) - 1 tablespoon

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the masa harina and salt.
  2. Gradually add warm water to the masa harina, mixing with your hands until a smooth dough forms. The dough should be pliable and not sticky.
  3. Divide the dough into 6 equal balls (about 30g each). Cover with a damp cloth to prevent drying out.
  4. Preheat a non-stick skillet or comal over medium-high heat.
  5. Take one ball of dough and flatten it between two pieces of parchment paper or plastic wrap using a tortilla press or a rolling pin, until it's about 1/8 inch thick.
  6. Carefully remove the flattened tortilla and place it on the hot skillet. Cook for about 30 seconds, or until small bubbles form and the edges start to lift.
  7. Flip the tortilla and cook for another 30 seconds on the other side. Remove from the skillet and keep warm in a clean kitchen towel. Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
  8. Serve the tortillas warm with your choice of toppings such as avocado, salsa, vegan cheese, or beans.
