Ingredients

  • Masa harina - 1 cup
  • Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Sugar - 1/3 cup
  • Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Unsalted butter - 1/4 cup, softened
  • Milk - 1/2 cup
  • Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
  • Ground cinnamon - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Corn husks - 8-10, soaked in warm water

Steps

  1. Soak the corn husks in warm water for at least 30 minutes to soften them.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine masa harina, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy, then add the milk, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon, mixing well.
  4. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  5. Take a soaked corn husk and spread about 2 tablespoons of the masa dough onto the center, leaving space at the sides.
  6. Fold the sides of the corn husk over the masa and then fold the bottom up to secure the tamale.
  7. Repeat until all the masa is used, placing the tamales upright in a steamer basket.
  8. Steam the tamales over boiling water for about 60 minutes, or until the masa pulls away from the husk easily.
  9. Remove from the steamer and let cool slightly before serving.
