Ingredients

  • White fish fillets (e.g., cod or tilapia) - 300 grams
  • Corn tortillas - 4 pieces
  • All-purpose flour - 1/2 cup
  • Cornstarch - 1/4 cup
  • Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Paprika - 1 teaspoon
  • Cayenne pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Cold sparkling water - 3/4 cup
  • Vegetable oil - for frying
  • Shredded green cabbage - 1 cup
  • Fresh cilantro - 1/4 cup, chopped
  • Avocado - 1 medium, diced
  • Lime - 1, juiced
  • Salt - to taste

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
  2. Gradually add the cold sparkling water to the dry ingredients, whisking until you have a smooth batter.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat until hot (around 180°C).
  4. Dip the fish fillets into the batter, allowing excess to drip off, then carefully place them in the hot oil.
  5. Fry the fish for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy, then remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. In a separate bowl, combine the diced avocado, lime juice, chopped cilantro, and salt to make the avocado salsa.
  7. Warm the corn tortillas in a dry skillet or microwave until pliable.
  8. To assemble the tacos, place a few pieces of fried fish on each tortilla, top with shredded cabbage and a generous spoonful of avocado salsa.
  9. Serve immediately with lime wedges on the side.
