Ingredients

Steps

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk, granulated sugar, and baking soda. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and continue to simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 1 to 1.5 hours until the mixture thickens and turns a golden caramel color.
  4. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Allow the dulce de leche to cool slightly before transferring it to a jar or container. It will thicken further as it cools.
