Ingredients

  • Fresh mussels - 250 grams
  • Lime juice - 60 ml (about 4 limes)
  • Red onion - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, diced
  • Cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Cucumber - 1 small, diced
  • Jalapeño - 1 small, finely chopped (optional)
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper - to taste
  • Avocado - 1 small, diced (for garnish)

Steps

  1. Rinse the mussels under cold running water to remove any sand or debris.
  2. In a pot, bring about 1 liter of water to a boil. Add the mussels and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until they open up. Discard any that remain closed.
  3. Remove the mussels from the pot and let them cool slightly. Once cooled, remove the mussels from their shells and chop them into bite-sized pieces.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped mussels, lime juice, red onion, tomato, cilantro, cucumber, and jalapeño (if using).
  5. Season the mixture with salt and black pepper to taste. Stir well to combine all the flavors.
  6. Cover the bowl and let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  7. Serve the ceviche in small bowls, garnished with diced avocado on top.
