  • Garlic powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin - 1 teaspoon
  • Paprika - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Lettuce leaves - 4 leaves
  • Tomato - 1 medium, sliced
  • Red onion - 1 small, thinly sliced
  • Avocado - 1 medium, sliced
  • Whole wheat burger buns - 2
  • Fresh cilantro - for garnish

Steps

  1. Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Slice the nopales into strips and rinse them under cold water to remove any slime.
  3. Brush the nopales with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Grill the nopales for about 3-4 minutes per side until tender and slightly charred, then set aside.
  5. In a bowl, mix the ground beef with garlic powder, cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
  6. Form the mixture into two equal patties.
  7. In the same grill or skillet, add the remaining olive oil and cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until cooked through to your desired doneness.
  8. While the patties are cooking, toast the burger buns on the grill until lightly golden.
  9. Assemble the burgers by placing a beef patty on each bun, topped with grilled nopales, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and avocado slices.
  10. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve immediately.
