Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour - 250 grams
  • warm water - 150 ml
  • active dry yeast - 7 grams
  • olive oil - 1 tablespoon
  • salt - 1 teaspoon
  • sugar - 1 teaspoon

Steps

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the frothy yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Mix the ingredients until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until it doubles in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 250°C (482°F) and place a baking sheet or pizza stone inside to heat up.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 4 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball.
  7. Roll each ball into a circle about 0.5 cm thick. Make sure to keep the surface floured to prevent sticking.
  8. Carefully place 2-3 rolled-out pitas on the preheated baking sheet or stone. Bake for about 5-7 minutes or until they puff up and are lightly golden.
  9. Remove the pita bread from the oven and cover them with a clean kitchen towel to keep them soft. Repeat with the remaining dough.
  10. Serve warm with your favorite dips or fresh vegetables.
