Ingredients
- Knafeh dough - 200 grams
- Unsalted cheese (like Akkawi or mozzarella) - 150 grams
- Greek yogurt - 100 grams
- Unsalted butter - 50 grams, melted
- Sugar - 50 grams
- Water - 100 ml
- Orange blossom water - 1 tablespoon
- Pistachios, crushed - 30 grams for garnish
Steps
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- In a pot, combine the sugar and water over medium heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Add the orange blossom water and bring to a boil for 2-3 minutes, then remove from heat and let cool.
- Shred the Knafeh dough into fine pieces and mix with the melted butter until evenly coated.
- In a greased 20cm (8-inch) round baking dish, press half of the dough mixture evenly on the bottom.
- Slice the cheese into thin strips and layer it over the dough base. Spread the Greek yogurt evenly on top of the cheese.
- Cover the filling with the remaining dough mixture, pressing gently to compact it.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown on top.
- Once baked, immediately pour the cooled syrup over the hot Knafeh, ensuring it's well soaked.
- Let it sit for 5-10 minutes before cutting into slices. Garnish with crushed pistachios before serving.
