Ingredients
- Ground beef - 400 grams
- Eggplant - 1 medium, sliced
- Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
- Cinnamon - 1/2 teaspoon
- Allspice - 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Tahini - 3 tablespoons
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
- Fresh parsley - 2 tablespoons, chopped
- Cheese (optional) - 50 grams, grated (for topping)
Steps
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F).
- Slice the eggplant into 1 cm thick rounds and sprinkle with salt. Let sit for 15 minutes to draw out moisture, then rinse and pat dry.
- In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion, sautéing until the onion is translucent.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned, then stir in cinnamon, allspice, salt, and black pepper. Remove from heat.
- In a separate pan, heat the remaining olive oil and fry the eggplant slices until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.
- In a small bowl, mix tahini and lemon juice to make a creamy sauce. If desired, add water to adjust the consistency.
- To assemble, layer half the eggplant slices on the bottom of a baking dish. Top with the beef mixture, then layer the remaining eggplant on top.
- Drizzle the tahini sauce over the layered moussaka and sprinkle with chopped parsley. If using, add grated cheese on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden.
- Remove from oven, let cool slightly, then slice into burger-sized portions and serve.
