Ingredients

  • Ground beef - 400 grams
  • Eggplant - 1 medium, sliced
  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Cinnamon - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Allspice - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Tahini - 3 tablespoons
  • Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
  • Fresh parsley - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Cheese (optional) - 50 grams, grated (for topping)

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F).
  2. Slice the eggplant into 1 cm thick rounds and sprinkle with salt. Let sit for 15 minutes to draw out moisture, then rinse and pat dry.
  3. In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion, sautéing until the onion is translucent.
  4. Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned, then stir in cinnamon, allspice, salt, and black pepper. Remove from heat.
  5. In a separate pan, heat the remaining olive oil and fry the eggplant slices until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.
  6. In a small bowl, mix tahini and lemon juice to make a creamy sauce. If desired, add water to adjust the consistency.
  7. To assemble, layer half the eggplant slices on the bottom of a baking dish. Top with the beef mixture, then layer the remaining eggplant on top.
  8. Drizzle the tahini sauce over the layered moussaka and sprinkle with chopped parsley. If using, add grated cheese on top.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden.
  10. Remove from oven, let cool slightly, then slice into burger-sized portions and serve.
