Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour - 1 cup
  • active dry yeast - 1 teaspoon
  • warm water - 1/2 cup
  • maple syrup - 1 tablespoon
  • salt - 1/4 teaspoon
  • cinnamon powder - 1 teaspoon
  • brown sugar - 1/4 cup
  • chopped walnuts - 2 tablespoons
  • coconut oil - 1 tablespoon
  • vanilla extract - 1/2 teaspoon

Steps

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm water and add the maple syrup. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt, then pour in the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth, then place it in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon powder, chopped walnuts, and vanilla extract to create the filling.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 4 equal pieces. Flatten each piece into a disk and place a tablespoon of filling in the center.
  6. Wrap the dough around the filling and pinch to seal. Shape into a ball and place seam side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and let the filled dough balls rest for another 15 minutes.
  8. Brush the tops with melted coconut oil and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your Vegan Hotteok warm!
