- Mackerel fillets - 300 grams
- Water - 300 milliliters
- Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 tablespoon, minced
- Soy sauce (Paleo-friendly) - 3 tablespoons
- Coconut sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
- Green onions - 2 stalks, chopped
- Red chili pepper - 1, sliced (optional)
- Black pepper - to taste
Steps
- In a medium pot, combine water, soy sauce, coconut sugar, minced garlic, minced ginger, and sesame oil. Stir well to create the sauce.
- Bring the sauce to a boil over medium heat.
- Once boiling, add the mackerel fillets to the pot, skin side down. Reduce heat to low and cover the pot.
- Simmer for about 15 minutes, occasionally spooning the sauce over the fish to ensure even cooking.
- After 15 minutes, carefully flip the mackerel fillets and add the chopped green onions and sliced red chili pepper if using.
- Cover and simmer for another 5-7 minutes until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
- Remove from heat and let it sit for a few minutes before serving.
