Ingredients

  • Mackerel fillets - 300 grams
  • Water - 300 milliliters
  • Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 tablespoon, minced
  • Soy sauce (Paleo-friendly) - 3 tablespoons
  • Coconut sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Green onions - 2 stalks, chopped
  • Red chili pepper - 1, sliced (optional)
  • Black pepper - to taste

Steps

  1. In a medium pot, combine water, soy sauce, coconut sugar, minced garlic, minced ginger, and sesame oil. Stir well to create the sauce.
  2. Bring the sauce to a boil over medium heat.
  3. Once boiling, add the mackerel fillets to the pot, skin side down. Reduce heat to low and cover the pot.
  4. Simmer for about 15 minutes, occasionally spooning the sauce over the fish to ensure even cooking.
  5. After 15 minutes, carefully flip the mackerel fillets and add the chopped green onions and sliced red chili pepper if using.
  6. Cover and simmer for another 5-7 minutes until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
  7. Remove from heat and let it sit for a few minutes before serving.
