Ingredients

  • Sweet rice flour (glutinous rice flour) - 200 grams
  • Water - 250 ml
  • Sugar - 50 grams
  • Soy sauce (kosher) - 2 tablespoons
  • Gochujang (Korean chili paste) - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic, minced - 1 clove
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - for grilling
  • Green onions, chopped - for garnish
  • Sesame seeds - for garnish

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine sweet rice flour and water, stirring until smooth. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
  2. Transfer the mixture to a pot and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens and becomes a sticky dough (about 5-7 minutes).
  3. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly. Once cool enough to handle, knead the dough for a couple of minutes.
  4. Divide the dough into small pieces (about 20 grams each), roll them into small logs, and then skewer them onto wooden sticks.
  5. In a small bowl, mix sugar, soy sauce, gochujang, minced garlic, and sesame oil to create a sauce.
  6. Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium heat and lightly oil it with vegetable oil. Grill the skewered rice cakes for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they develop a nice golden color.
  7. Brush the sweet and spicy sauce onto the rice cakes while grilling.
  8. Once done, remove from heat, garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds, and serve hot.
