Ingredients
- Whole mackerel - 2 (about 300g each)
- Soy sauce - 30ml
- Mirin - 15ml
- Sake - 15ml
- Sesame oil - 5ml
- Fresh ginger, grated - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic, minced - 1 clove
- Green onions, chopped - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Lemon wedges - for serving
Steps
- Clean the mackerel by removing the guts and rinsing it under cold water; pat dry with paper towels.
- In a bowl, combine soy sauce, mirin, sake, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, and a pinch of salt to create the marinade.
- Place the cleaned mackerel in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over it; let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes.
- Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat.
- Remove the mackerel from the marinade and place it skin-side down on the grill; cook for 6-8 minutes.
- Flip the fish carefully and grill for another 6-8 minutes or until the flesh is opaque and flakes easily.
- Remove from the grill and let it rest for a couple of minutes before serving.
- Garnish with chopped green onions and serve with lemon wedges on the side.
