Ingredients
- Firm tofu - 200 grams
- Panko breadcrumbs - 100 grams
- All-purpose flour - 50 grams
- Plant-based milk - 100 ml
- Soy sauce - 1 tablespoon
- Vegetable oil - for frying
- Whole grain bread - 4 slices
- Cabbage - 100 grams, finely shredded
- Tonkatsu sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon (optional)
Steps
- Press the tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then slice it into two equal cutlets.
- In a shallow bowl, prepare the batter by mixing the all-purpose flour, plant-based milk, and soy sauce until smooth.
- In another bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs. Dip each tofu cutlet first into the batter, then coat it evenly with the panko breadcrumbs.
- Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully place the breaded tofu cutlets into the pan and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the fried tofu from the pan and place it on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- Toast the whole grain bread slices lightly in a toaster or on a pan.
- To assemble the sandwich, spread a tablespoon of tonkatsu sauce on each slice of toasted bread.
- Place a crispy tofu cutlet on two of the slices, top with shredded cabbage, and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired. Cap with the remaining slices of bread.
- Cut the sandwiches in half and serve immediately, with extra tonkatsu sauce on the side if desired.
