Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 200 grams
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • All-purpose flour - 1/4 cup
  • Plant-based milk - 1/3 cup
  • Panko breadcrumbs - 1 cup
  • Vegetable oil - 1/4 cup (for frying)
  • TonKatsu sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Shredded cabbage - 1 cup
  • Lemon wedges - 2

Steps

  1. Press the tofu for 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into 1 cm thick slabs.
  2. Season the tofu slabs with salt and black pepper on both sides.
  3. Set up a breading station with three shallow bowls: one with flour, one with plant-based milk, and one with panko breadcrumbs.
  4. Dip each tofu slab first in flour, then in plant-based milk, and finally coat it with panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the breaded tofu slabs and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove the fried tofu and place it on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
  7. Serve the vegan katsu with tonkatsu sauce drizzled over the top, garnished with shredded cabbage and lemon wedges on the side.
