Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 400 grams
  • Panko breadcrumbs - 100 grams
  • All-purpose flour - 50 grams
  • Cornstarch - 25 grams
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Egg - 1 (or flax egg for vegan option)
  • Vegetable oil - 100 ml (for frying)
  • Tonkatsu sauce - 3 tablespoons
  • Shredded cabbage - 100 grams (for serving)
  • Lemon wedges - 2 (for serving)

Steps

  1. Press the tofu for 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into 2 thick slices.
  2. In a shallow bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. In another bowl, beat the egg (or prepare the flax egg) and set aside.
  4. Place the panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
  5. Coat each tofu slice first in the flour mixture, then dip into the egg, and finally coat with panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the breaded tofu slices.
  7. Fry the tofu for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove the tofu from the pan and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve the tofu katsu hot with shredded cabbage, a drizzle of tonkatsu sauce, and lemon wedges on the side.
