- Firm tofu - 400 grams
- Panko breadcrumbs - 100 grams
- All-purpose flour - 50 grams
- Cornstarch - 25 grams
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Garlic powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Egg - 1 (or flax egg for vegan option)
- Vegetable oil - 100 ml (for frying)
- Tonkatsu sauce - 3 tablespoons
- Shredded cabbage - 100 grams (for serving)
- Lemon wedges - 2 (for serving)
Steps
- Press the tofu for 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into 2 thick slices.
- In a shallow bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
- In another bowl, beat the egg (or prepare the flax egg) and set aside.
- Place the panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
- Coat each tofu slice first in the flour mixture, then dip into the egg, and finally coat with panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
- Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the breaded tofu slices.
- Fry the tofu for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the tofu from the pan and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Serve the tofu katsu hot with shredded cabbage, a drizzle of tonkatsu sauce, and lemon wedges on the side.
