  • Beef sirloin, thinly sliced - 300 grams
  • Onion, thinly sliced - 1 medium (about 150 grams)
  • Soy sauce (kosher) - 3 tablespoons
  • Mirin (kosher) - 2 tablespoons
  • Sake (kosher) - 2 tablespoons
  • Sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Water - 150 milliliters
  • Vegetable oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Cooked jasmine rice - 2 cups
  • Green onions, chopped - 2 tablespoons
  • Pickled ginger, for garnish - optional

Steps

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until translucent.
  3. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the sliced beef to the pan, cooking for 2-3 minutes until browned.
  4. In a bowl, mix together the soy sauce, mirin, sake, sugar, and water until the sugar is dissolved.
  5. Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and onions, reduce the heat to medium, and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. While the beef is simmering, prepare the jasmine rice according to package instructions if not already cooked.
  7. Once the sauce has thickened slightly and the beef is tender, remove from heat.
  8. Serve the beef mixture over bowls of jasmine rice, garnished with chopped green onions and pickled ginger if desired.
