Ingredients

  • Penne pasta - 200 grams
  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
  • Red chili flakes - 1 teaspoon (adjust to taste)
  • Canned diced tomatoes - 400 grams
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Fresh basil leaves - a handful, torn
  • Parmesan cheese - for serving (optional)

Steps

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the penne pasta according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 10-12 minutes.
  2. While the pasta is cooking, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
  4. Stir in the red chili flakes and cook for another 30 seconds.
  5. Add the canned diced tomatoes to the skillet, along with salt and black pepper. Simmer the sauce for about 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Once the pasta is cooked, drain it and add it to the skillet with the sauce. Toss to combine, allowing the pasta to absorb the flavors.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in the torn basil leaves.
  8. Serve hot with grated Parmesan cheese on top if desired.
