Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour - 200 grams
  • Unsalted butter - 100 grams, chilled and cubed
  • Granulated sugar - 50 grams
  • Egg yolks - 2
  • Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Milk - 100 ml
  • Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
  • Cornstarch - 20 grams
  • Salt - a pinch
  • Powdered sugar - for dusting

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the chilled butter and rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Mix in the granulated sugar and the egg yolks until the dough comes together. If it's too crumbly, add a tablespoon of cold water at a time until it forms a smooth ball.
  3. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. While the dough is chilling, prepare the custard filling. In a saucepan, whisk together the milk, cornstarch, sugar, and vanilla extract over medium heat until it thickens. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  5. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  6. Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 3-5 mm thickness. Cut out circles large enough to line the bottom and sides of your baking molds.
  7. Place the dough circles in the molds, fill each with the custard filling, and cover with another smaller circle of dough. Pinch the edges to seal.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Let them cool slightly before removing from the molds. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
