  • Halal Italian sausage - 250 grams
  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Crushed tomatoes - 400 grams (1 can)
  • Red pepper flakes - 1/2 teaspoon (optional)
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper - to taste
  • Fresh basil - a handful, chopped
  • Parmesan cheese - 30 grams, grated (optional)

Steps

  1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside, reserving a small cup of pasta water.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Remove the casing from the halal sausage and crumble it into the skillet. Cook until browned and fully cooked, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 7-10 minutes.
  5. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and red pepper flakes (if using). Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Add the cooked pasta to the sauce, tossing to combine. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of reserved pasta water to loosen it.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in the chopped fresh basil. Serve hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
