Ingredients
- Pasta (e.g., spaghetti or linguine) - 200 grams
- Onions - 300 grams (about 3 medium onions)
- Halal beef (e.g., chuck or stewing beef) - 150 grams, diced
- Extra virgin olive oil - 3 tablespoons
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Carrot - 1 medium, diced
- Celery - 1 stalk, diced
- Bay leaf - 1
- Salt - to taste
- Black pepper - to taste
- Parmesan cheese (optional, for serving) - 30 grams, grated
- Fresh basil - for garnish
Steps
- Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the diced halal beef and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes.
- Remove the beef from the pan and set aside. In the same pan, add the sliced onions, carrot, and celery. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and translucent, about 15 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and bay leaf to the pan, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
- Return the browned beef to the pan, season with salt and black pepper, and stir well. Add enough water to cover the mixture, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened.
- While the sauce is simmering, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain the pasta, reserving a cup of pasta water.
- Once the beef sauce is ready, mix in the cooked pasta. If the sauce is too thick, add a little reserved pasta water to reach your desired consistency.
- Serve hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil for garnish.
